Remembered today as an important collector of his fellow Impressionists’ work, the independently wealthy Caillebotte was also an active painter throughout the 1870s and into the 1880s. This possibly unfinished scene of pleasure boating on the river Yerres, a tributary of the Seine, reflects lessons learned from Monet and Renoir in the sparkling treatment of water, described with unblended strokes of white and green. The Caillebotte family owned a large estate, also called Yerres, fifteen miles southeast of Paris; the artist likely began this canvas there.
